Officials with the dormant White River sawmill are hoping to reinvent themselves in 2010.
Company President Jeff Butler plans to expand the operation with wood pellet technology and value-added products.
White River Forest Products are hopeful of securing the Crown fibre supply necessary to press ahead with a 90-million dollar project that would also see an existing co-generation plant powered up from 7.5 megawatts to 20.

Premier Dalton McGuinty is defending his decision to add theaboriginal affairs portfolio to Attorney General Chris Bentley's duties.
McGuinty says his government isn't amalgamating or merging ministries, but rather, having one minister in charge of separate ministries.

Dryden Police are disheartened to learn that a local resident has fallen victim to a scam targeting seniors.
Police say a grandparent receives a phone call from a con-artist claiming to be one of the grandchildren.
The caller goes on to say they are in some kind of trouble and need money immediately and don't want anyone else to know.
A local senior lost a large sum of money in this scam and Police ask that you contact other family members to confirm the whereabouts of any relative before sending cash.

Making Kenora Home
The Making Kenora Home Committee says its continuing to seek funding for a low-cost housing project.
Nan Normand is a spokesperson for the committee and says unfortunately they have not been able to secure any funding for the project.
Normand says the good news is that both the federal and provincial levels of government are continuing to keep them up to date on any new funding programs and she's hopeful they may be able to secure funding in the months ahead.

The City of Kenora is a step closer to swapping Town Island on Lake of the Woods with the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Last night, city council declared the island surplus to municipal purposes.
Councillor Dave McCann says they have been talking with the MNR about swapping crown land of similar value.
McCann says the property the MNR is considering swapping for Town Island lies south of Dufresne Island near the Kenora By-Pass.
He suggests it could still take several months before the land transaction is complete.

Drug Bust Sioux Lookout
A large drug bust in Sioux Lookout.OPP searched a Sioux Lookout home and recovered 44-thousand dollars worth of Oxycontin and Oxycocet pills.
Police say 26-year-old Leonid Shipner of Sioux Lookout and 44-year-old Shane Presley of Missisauga are both in custody and face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of marihuana.
Both men will appear in court next Monday.

Kenora's Property and Planning Commitee has decided to scrap its proposed changes to the sing by-law.
Committee Chair Councilor Wendy Cuthbert says they need to develop a bylaw that is more business and user friendly.
Beaver Creek Rance Owner Amanda Boucha presented her concerns to the committee on Tuesday.
The new draft sign bylaw will be presented for public review and comment at an information session in the near future.

Hope Leaves KPDSB
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has a bit of an administrative void to fill.
Larry Hope's last day on the job as Director of Education was January 12th.
Hope says he enjoyed each one of his 20 years as an employee of the public school board.
Hope is moving to Lindsey where he will become the Director of Education with the Trillium Lakelands School Board.
The local school board has started interviewing candidates to replace Hope as Director of Education.

Planned Power Outage Hydro One
Some Kenora area residents can expect the power to go out this afternoon.
The lights will be out from 2 to 4 today in the area north of Kenora between the Winnipeg River and Black Sturgeon Lake.
Hydro One customers in Jeffery township on the north side of Rabbit Lake, Round Lake and Pellat can also expect the outage.
Rat Portage First Nation and some areas south of Keewatin will also be impacted.
Hydro One is using the downtime to perform maintenance and upgrades to their equipment.

Budget Meeting
Kenora City Council's 2010 budget is expected to be approved by the February 8th committee of the whole meetings.
Council went over the draft budget again on Wednesday.
Finance Manager Karen Brown says they saw an increase in their share of the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund.
Policing costs for the City of Kenora will also bring in a savings of 284 thousand dollars.
The savings found through policing will be put into a new contingency reserve.

Fire Halls
The City of Kenora is planning to dispose of its old fire halls in Kenora and Jaffray Melick once the new building on Barsky's Hill is complete.
Fire Chief Warren Brinkman says he would like to deal with the issue sooner rather than later, because people are already calling him about the old fire halls.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board will be offering all-day everyday kindergarten at St. Louis School in Keewatin this fall.
The provincial government announced yesterday the 580 schools involved in the first year of the program.
Phylis Aikre is the Director of Education with the separate school board and says for them, St. Louis was the logical location to start up the program.
Aikre says they have lots of room at St. Louis to host the all-day everyday junior and senior kindergarten programs and parents in the communityhave been very supportive of the program.

Two-hundred-thousand community college students in Ontario will be worried for the next month about whether they will be able to finish their school year.
Their instructors have voted by about 57 per cent to support strike action.
Ted Montgomery of the OP-SEU bargaining team, says a walkout wouldn't happen for at least a month.
Both sides have indicated they would like to resume talks which stopped in December.

Aboriginal Trustee School Board
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has officially sworn in its new aborigial trustee.
Mary-Ann Ketchemonia took her oath of office at last night's board meeting.
Ketchemonia is from the Eagle Lake First Nation and was appointed byschool board trustees to the position back in November.

Kenora City Council has turned down a request from the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Community Foundation for 3.5 million dollars.
The foundation made the request just before Christmas, but at a committee of the whole meeting yesterday, members of council say they aren't ready to look at such a rich donation at this time.
Chief Administrative Officer Bill Presentanz says the only place council could secure such funding is from the KMTS Prosperity Fund, and council has indicated it doesn't want that money touched at all.
Councillor Dave McCann says if they decided to find the money, it would be detrimental to local taxpayers, and its not something he is prepared to do at this time.

Ryan Haines was hired by the City of Kenora to conduct the study looking at the lake's oxygen, temperature, phosphorous, and algae levels.
Haines says fairly stable water temperatures and oxygen levels are extremly important to the lake's fish population.
Lower Black Sturgeon's phosphorous levels are below the Provincial Government's Ontario wide average, but Haines notes there is a significant difference in phosphorus levels in the inlet and outlet of the lake.
Haines is suggesting the City add an extra testing site near the Upper part of Black Sturgeon to see if phosphorus is travelling from that part of the lake into the lower section.

Kenora's court sport teams travelled to Dryden yesterday, and the Junior Boys Basketball team fell to the Eagles 41-34 in overtime.
The Kenora Seniors boys team beat the Eagles 41-19.

Council Nominations
Then there was one.
The first person to officially the 2010 municipal election race in the City of Kenora has officially filed his nomination papers.
Councillor Jim Parsons filed his papers yesterday and plans to run for council in October.
Parsons was recently appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Andrew Poirier back
in July.
Local residents have until September 10 to file their nomination papers.

Crimestoppers of Northwestern Ontario and Northern Minnesota has made some significant gains in 2009.
The program saw a 31 percent increase in the number of tips received.
Executive Director Doug Anderson says they also saw a 36 percent jump in the amount of tips paid out.

Mischief to area snowmobile trails
OPP are looking into a complaint of mischief on area snowmobile trails.
Postings and signs for snowmachine trails in Keewatin have been vandalized.
OPP remind the public that most of the work done on marking and maintenance of those trails is done by volunteers.
Removing posted signs or markers could results in operators going to areas that may not be safe.
If anyone has information about the vandalism they can call the OPP or Crimestoppers.

Serious Accident
A Toronto man is in hospital in serious condition following a single vehicle crash on Highway 17 between Vermilion Bay and Kenora.
OPP say the crash occured around 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, about 40-kilometres east of Kenora.
Police say a transport left the highway and rolled over in the ditch.
The 54-year-old driver was transported to Winnipeg with spine and head injuries.
The crash forced the closure of the Trans-Canada for an hour.

At least one department in the City of Kenora is expected to make money in 2010.
The budget for the solid waste department was approved at a meeting yesterday.
Councillor Dave McCann says they are projecting a 723 thousand dollar surplus for garbage collection, the waste transfer station and landfill operations.
McCann says the Solid Waste Budget does not include recycling costs.
He adds that recycling continues to cost the city money, because there is no market for our recycled goods.

Two Wisconsin hunters have been convicted of charges related to illegal deer hunting in the Dryden area.
Dennis Majewski is being ordered to pay 25-hundred dollars and Sean Meier 1-thousand dollars for hunting at night.

One of the men parked his truck in the middle of the road, used his lights to illuminate a deer standing in the ditch, while the other man got out and shot the buck.

New Board Governance Model
The Lake of the Woods District Hospital wants to change the way its hosptial board operates.
The board is considering a corporate model, that would mean they wouldn't take part in the municipal elections this October.
Chair Debbie Baldwin says they're looking for feedback from the community and want to know what the public would like to see in their hospital board.
Further meetings are planned on the topic in the future, and a new board model could be in place before the June annual general meeting.

ILevel Timberstrand Mill
The ILevel Timberstrand Mill on the Jones Road is looking forward to better times in 2010.
After enduring a couple of very quiet years, mill manager Bill Candline says things are starting to look up.
He expects they will be able to ramp up production by the spring.
Candline says the mill is currenlty working between three, and three and a half days a week, to meet their order paper.

Sunset Trail Riders Trails Update
90 percent of the Sunset Trail Rider Club's trails are open.
President Ken Bracken says most of their trails are ready for snowmobilers.
Bracken adds more snow is needed to get the groomers out on some land trails.

Emergency Services System NWO
The Northwest Local Health Integration Network wants to create a regional emergency services system.
It's one of the many ideas contained in the regional study.
Members of the Lake of the Woods Hospital Board have mixed feelings on the idea, stating that there are some good points but also some areas of concern.
C.E.O. Marc Balcaen says one of their concerns involves who will govern the emergency services commitee.
The hospital board is drafting a letter to the NW LHIN stating their concerns.

The OPP say that around 9:00 last night, a fight broke out in the Minto area.
Two people sustained stab wounds and were taken to Lake of the WoodsDistrict Hospital for treatment.
One of the victims was released a short time later and the other was held for observation.
A short time later, police were able to arrest a21 year old Merrill Land.
A second suspect, a 17 year old male youth was arrested Thursday afternoon.
They have both been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Pikangikum Help
Two trailers filled with several bags and boxes of children's clothing, diapers and food items are on their way to Pikagikum First Nation.
The items were collected last month by Family and Children Services Rainy River.
Constable Anne McCoy is the O-P-P is helping FACS with the delivery.

Municipal Elections
Local residents have nine months to decide whether they want to run in this year's municipal elections.
Nomination forms have been available since January 4th, but so far, no-one has expressed interest in any of the races.
Joanne McMillin is the city clerk and says people can drop by her office for the nomination forms.

The murder of Susan Assin in Kenora in 1974 is one of the cases on the OPP's website.

Richards Golf Tournament
In addition to captaining the Philadelphia Flyers and being named to the Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey Team, Mike Richards is going to find some timeto organize a new charity golf tournament.
The tournament will take place at the Kenora Golf and Country Club on July 15th.
He's not sure whether it will become an annual event or not.
Proceeds will go to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional CommunityFoundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

December Weather Normal
Despite frigid temperatures over the past couple of weeks, the weather this past December was pretty average.
Environment Canada Climatologist, Geoff Coulson says while we received a bit more snow than usual, temperatures were pretty normal.
Coulson says the cold, clear weather will likely remain with us for the forseeable future, with temperatures moderating slightly by the weekend.

Rickford on Proroguing Parliment
The Member of Parliament for the Kenora Riding is defending the government's decision to suspend the current sitting of the House of Commons.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogued parliament until March which will kill a number of bills currently on the order paper.
Greg Rickford says that will not affect all bills, including the private members bill to kill the Federal Long gun Registry.
Rickford suggests the delay in the next sitting of Parliament will mean that he will be able to spend more time in the riding meeting with his constituents.

OPP Ride Check Stats
The Kenora Detachment of the OPP was kept busy with its festive RIDE programover the past five weeks.
The annual campaign wrapped up on Saturday and police say they stopped over 13 thousand vehicles in the Kenora area.
A total of eight people were charged with impaired driving or refusing to provide a breath sample.
Officers also issued five three-day suspensions for motorists registering a warning at roadside check stops.

Northwestern Ontario Buses
The provincial government is rejecting calls to extend Ontario Northland bus service into northwestern Ontario.Starting in the middle of January, Greyhound will be reducing service in this region to just bus a day from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle says he'd rather see the private sector take the initiative, rather than the provincial government.
The provincial government subsidizes bus service to northeastern Ontario to the tune of 25 million dollars a year, and some opposition members at Queen's Park feel northwestern Ontario deserves similar treatment.

Olympic Torch Relay Kenora
Despite frigid temperatures, the City of Kenora gave the Olympic Torch a warm welcome.
About three thousand people crammed into the Harborfront Parking Lot to witness the lighting of the Olympic Cauldrun.
Wayne Fiecek was the final Olympic Torch bearer and says it was an experienceof a lifetime.
The Olympic Torch will have two final stops today before leaving Ontario.
Ten people will carry the flame from Lake of the Woods Museum and over to Keewatin.
The Torch will also roll into the Shoal Lake #39 First Nation later this morning.

Sexual Assault Charge
A routine Ride stop resulted in a variety of charges being laid against several Kenora area residents.
OPP stopped a vehicle that attempted to bypass a RIDE checkpoint on December 19th.
The driver 26 year old Jim Scott of White Dog First Nation was charged with impaired driving.
Further investigation led to two of the vehicle's passengers being arrested for various bail violations.
The 15 year old female passenger told police she had been sexually assaulted earlier that evening by one of the male passengers.
35 year old Gerald Scott has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
OPP say further charges may be pending.

Saturday night the Thistles dominated Fort Frances winning 7-0.

Sunday afternoon it was the Thunderhawks pulling off a 4-3 win.
The two teams will meet again January 9th when the rivalry moves to Fort Frances.

Excitement is starting to build as the Olympic Torch gets ready to make its way toKenora this evening.
A total of seven people will carry the torch from Mikana Way down to the Harborfront starting at about 6:45 tonight.

DriveTest workers will be back to work this morning after a long strike.
Workers have ratified a new contract after a strike that hadprevented many Ontario residents from getting new drivers' licenses or renewals since August.
Some 590 DriveTest employees walked off the job August 21st aftertalks with their employer, Serco, collapsed.

New Tourism Officer
The City of Kenora has hired a Tourism Officer to work with the Economic Development Team.
Heather Paterson starts her new job today and has been given the task of implementing the City's tourism plan.
Economic Development Manager Jennifer Findlay says it was extremly important to hire a Tourism Officer.

STR Snowmobiling Season
The Sunset Trail Riders Club is gearing up for the 2010 snowmobiling season.President Ken Bracken says they've been hard at work grooming area trails and preparing signage.
Bracken notes they've also had a little more financial help than previous years.
The STR recently received funding from from the OFSC, and the Federal Government to rebuild the Ethelma Lake bridge.
Trail permit sales are slightly down from last year, but Bracken notes that's probably due to
November and December's warmer than normal weather.
Permits are available for purchase throughout the snowmobile season.

Sudden Death Update
OPP have released the name of the person who was found dead at a hotel in Kenora last week.
44 year old Stephane Simard of B.C. was travelling with his common law spouse to Quebec for
the Christmas Holidays.
Simard was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem exam revealed his death was due to natural causes.

A toxicology report is expected to provide more information into the death of a 26 year old in Kenora.
OPP are investigating the death of Sheena Jack on December 21st.

Emergency Shelter Funding
Good news for those who use the emergency shelter in the cold winter months, the Provincial Government has decided to provide funding to operate the program at the Fellowship Centre.
The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities reversed their decision to no longer fund the program on December 23rd.
The Province will only fund the emergency shelter for one more year through the Job Creation Partnership Program.
It costs around 123-thousand dollars to operate the shelter 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Municipal Elections October
Kenora Mayor Len Compton is keeping his cards close to his vestregarding his future in municipal politics.
In a year end interview with CJRL news, Compton refused to saywhether he planned to run in the next municipal election.
Nominations forms for the 2010 municipal elections will be availablestarting January 4th.

Thunder Bay-Rainy River M-P John Rafferty feels the NDP made some gains during the past session at the House of Commons.

Rainy River Resources Year End
Rainy River Resources will continue its exploration activities in the district next year.

Beer Store Theft Update
Thunder Bay police are trying to determine if two men charged with driving a Jeep into a Beer Store are responsible for other break-ins at beer and liquor stores using thesame heavy-handed method.
A 30-year-old and a 20-year-old are charged with breaking and entering and possession of stolen property.
What police do know is that a pickup was stolen early on Monday but it broke down so thieves then stole a Jeep.

Two people charged with defrauding two Thunder Bay companies of more than a quarter million dollars are due in court in February.
Kerry Wirkkunen is charged with fraud, theft, forgery and mischief while Jaye Wirkkunen is charged with fraud and possession of stolen property.
The charges stem from a two-month investigation into fraud at A-B-P Constructors and another company.

Truck Goes Through Ice
A Manitoba motorist ventured off the ice road on Monday and his truck broke through the ice just south of Thompson Island.
The driver and three occupants travelled off the marked path at Hough and Wild Cat Island.
All four occupants exited the vehicle and had to walk a short distance before flagging down another vehicle to drive them to safety.

Beer Store Robbery
Three people are in custody after a vehicle plowed through thefront of a Beer Store in Thunder Bay -- and five to 10 cases of beerwere stolen.

Nuinsco Resources is selling its Cameron Lake gold project and a gold mill to Coventry

The deal is valued at 12 million dollars in Canadian funds.

The legislation was passed earlier this fall, but now the government wantsto get feedback on the actual regulations contained in the act.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle says there area number of issues they want feedback on.

The City of Kenora will soon have a new marina.
Changes in Latitude will be completing the final touches on its marina on highway 17 west this spring.
Councillor Wendy Cuthbert says they look forward to seeing the 38 boat slips and parking spaces.
Resurfacing the parking lot and painting parking space lines will be conducted in the spring.

Shoplifter Assault Dryden
A 22-year-old Dryden man is in custody following a reported assault on Tuesday.
Police say a security officer was trying to arrest a shoplifter at a local grocery store when he was assaulted by the suspect.

O-P-P continue their watch for drunk drivers this holiday season.
More than 18-thousand vehicles have been stopped in RIDE spot-checks across northwestern Ontario since the Festive Campaign began in late November.
In the Rainy River district, over 44-hundred vehicles have been stopped with just one impaired driving charge laid.
Two other motorists had their licenses suspended for recording a blood alcohol level of between point-0-5 and point 0-8

Income from the fund will be used by the long term care facility to operate its programs.

Ice Candles Festival Today
The Lake of the Woods Cemetery's Festival of Lights is a go for this evening.Over 60 volunteers will light the ice candles this afternoon starting at 1pm.
Parks Supervisor Barb Manson says the ice candles will be left burning up until Boxing Day.
Manson says they're happy to have the help lighting the candles, and is thanking the festivals many volunteers.

Dryden is being encouraged to join a Northwestern Ontario Immigration Portal.The initiative is being run by the City of Thunder Bay.
Dryden Community Matters Spokesperson David Durance says the goal is to showcase participating Communities to newcomers.

November Policing Stats
November was a slower month for Kenora OPP.
Inspector Dave Lucas has provided a monthly update to the Kenora Police Services Board.
Lucas says uniformed officers accrued over 256 hours of over time last month.

Environment Canada is calling for 10 centimetres of snowfall in much of Northwestern Ontario.
Spokesperson Peter Kimbell says the next couple of days will see snow and heavy winds.
Kimbell adds motorists should still be careful on area roadways since the wind and snow could make visibility difficult.

The province's plan to create 13 new tourism zones isn't sitting well with all tourist groups in this region.
A conference call was held yesterday by the Ministry of Tourism to explain how the new regions were going to work.
Gerry Cariou is the executive director of the Ontario Sunset Country Travel Association and says basically the province is trying to control how tourist marketing dollars aregoing to be spent.
Cariou says Sunset Country will continue to operate and use the internet extensively to market this region.
He admits the creation of the new tourism regions will likely have a small impact ontheir annual budget.

The Kenora Detachment is preparing for the New Year and has released an estimated figure for policing costs in 2010.
Inspector Dave Lucas says nothing is set in stone.
The estimated costs for the OPP in 2010 is set at just over 6.4 million dollars.

Christmas travel plans for residents in the Rainy River district and the rest of Northwestern Ontario may be altered.
Mark Firman of Environment Canada says a major storm is gathering strength in the western United States, and is headed for the area.

Fellowship Centre Winter Project
The Fellowship Center on Water Street will continue its emergency drop-in facility this winter despite a lack of funding.
The provincial government had been providing some job-training money to the group for the past three year.
Colin Wasacase is member of the Board of the Fellowship Center and says that source of funding recently dried up.
Wasacase says they plan to start up a campaign in the new year to try and get local agencies and businesses to provide funding for their "Winter Project".

Economic Development Commission Budget
The Lake of the Woods Economic Development Corporation won't be seeking any increase in its budget from the City of Kenora next year.
The commission presented its draft budget to council on Friday.
Geordie McEwan is one of the directors of the commission and saysthey had talked about a modest increase, but decided against it.
Total spending for the Economic Development Commission will be about 690 thousand dollars, which includes funding for the city's tourism department and Economic Development officer.
