Summit on Ring of Fire called a Success

Some are calling it an unprecidented meeting.

A weekend summit of First Nations and regional municipal leaders on the Ring of Fire produced a resolution supporting Exton in Greenstone as the site of the proposal chromite smelter.

Greenstone Mayor Ren Beaulieu says for the first time, a united front is emerging.

A total of five first nation communities also attended the summit. 

OPP Traffic Unit Stays Busy

The OPP are in the midst of a two week long seatbelt campaign, but officers have been busy charging drivers with a variety of other offenses.

Over the past couple of days, the OPP's Traffic Division has charged one motorist for driving while suspended.

Three other people were nailed for driving without a licence while another driver had his vehicle impounded for 45 days for prohibited driving.

The Spring seatbelt campaign will wrap up on April 22nd.

CCAC Launches Speak Up campaign

Area residents are being encouraged to "Speak Up" about the type of health care they want in the event they aren't able to communicate their wishes later on.

Marg Poling of the Northwest Community Care Access Centre says too many people aren't prepared.

Officials says the discussions should start early and often as situations in life changes

Two Common Ground Research Projects complete

A million dollar research fund is starting to bear fruit for Tunnel Island.

The first two research papers from the Common Ground Research Forum have been completed.

Teika Newton heads up the Forum and says they will be presenting the results of the research papers in June.

The research papers looked at the attitude of local residents towards Tunnel Island and the Common Ground initiative.

Alzheimer Society Launches Penny Drive

Call it Pennies from Heaven.

The Alzheimer Society of Kenora and Rainy River is launching a penny drive to raise funds for its programs locally.

Lynn Moffatt is executive director and says they will also be offering prizes to major contributors.

A number of containers have been set up at businesses across the city so people can drop off their pennies.

Thistles Back in Action Today at the Allan Cup

Two teams searching for their first win at the Allan Cup in Lloyminster will do battle this evening.

The Kenora Thistles will face the Stoney Plains Eagles tonight in a clash of 0-1 teams.

The Eagles lost their first game of the Allan Cup last night 3-2 to the host Lloydminster Border Kings.

Meanwhile, the Southeast Prairie Thunder have a perfect 2-0 record after beating up on Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland 5-2 last night.

T.A. Student Advances to finals of Ontario Technological Skills Competition

A Kenora student is heading to Waterloo at the end of this month to showcase his carpentry skills.

Kevin Schabler from Thomas Aquinas won the individual carpentry competition put on by Confederation College for local high school students.

This was the regional contest to see who would qualify for the Ontario Technological Skills Competition in carpentry, culinary arts, television production and welding.

The top three finishers in each division advance to the provincial championships.

Schabler was the only Kenora student to advance.

Kenora Businessman Faces Hefty Fine

A Kenora businessman is facing a hefty fine for illegally taking gravel from a local pit.

Roland Roen was fined 10 thousand dollars for 13 counts of failing to pay annual fees, another two thousand dollars for operating a gravel pit without a permit and two thousand for harvesting on crow land without a licence.

The court heard that Roen had been hired by Ontario Hydro to repair a road in the Gundy Lake area back in 2008.

Material used for the road repair was removed from a nearby small pit on Crown land, for which Roen did not have a permit.

He also removed trees from three of his aggregate pits without obtaining a forest resource licence.

Boil Water Advisory in Lakeside area

About 30 homes in the Lakeside area are under a boil water advisory today.

The advisory was issued by the Northwestern Health Unit after a water main break in the 5th Street South area yesterday morning.

City operations manager, Rick Perchuck says crews has since found the water main leak and have been able to repair it.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect for at least a couple of days as the Health Unit waits for water tests to come back clear of any contamination.

Plans for Economic Development Agency Get a Rough Ride

Some members of city council are raising concerns about a proposed new regional economic development agency for northwestern Ontario.

Councillor Rory McMillan says he doesn't like some of the proposed governance models for the agency, which potentially could have a board with as many as 32 members.

Mayor Dave Canfield says while he can understand the concerns, he supports the Economic Development Agency in principal.

Canfield adds that the regional economic development agency will be one of the issues up for discussion next week at the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association Conference in Kenora.

Another Reminder to Lock it or Lose It

Another good reason to lock your vehicle.

The OPP say they are investigating the theft of a Blackberry Playbook from a vehicle parked in the 5th Street South area on Friday the 13th.

Police say the car wasn't locked at the time.

The OPP have been preaching the message of "lock it or Lose it" for several years, and says leaving valuables in plain view makes it easier for thefts to occur.

Campbell Presents Petitions At Queen's Park

The first petition supporting saving the area's tourist information centre from closures is now before the Ontario legislature.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell says studies show this region brings in more money per stay than any other part of Ontario, in part due to visitors attending attractions they learned about by visiting the tourist information centres.

Campbell expects to bring more petitions in the near future.

Positive Reviews for Computers in the Classroom

Classroom computers aren't going to be a passing fad.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board recently completed a survey of staff, students and parents about the use of netbooks and computer tablets.

Lakewood principal Lynn McAughey says 99 percent of parents supported the use of the technology.

The surveys also found an overwhelming majority of students liked using computers to do their school work, and found it helped them complete their work more easily.

Thistles lose First Game at Allan Cup

The Kenora Thistles weren't able to hang onto a 3-2 second period lead and lost 7-4 to the host team from Lloydminster in their first game at the Allan Cup.

Lloyminster scored five third period goals in the come from behind victory.

Penalty trouble hurt the Thistles, who went to the penalty box seven times and received two misconducts in the third period.

The Border Kings capitalized with four power play goals in the third to put the game away.

Sean Hughes, Jon Johnson, Jonathan Poirier and Ryan Bowen each scored for the Thistles in a losing cause.

Their next game is Wednesday night against the Pacific Division Champions from Stoney Plains.

Common Ground Sold Out Again

The annual Common Ground story-telling session was another huge success.

Common Ground took place on Saturday at the Lakeside Inn featuring stories about the Stone Boat Company, the Hilliard House Opera Company, the early history of Ukrainians in Kenora, and a history of the Kenora and District Festival of Arts.

Common Ground is an oral history of Kenora, and has been held the past six years.

The event was sold out with about 200 people in attendance.

OPP investigate Fatality in Pikangikum

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 32 year old Pikangikum First Nation man.

Officers were called to a house on the First Nation to deal with an altercation on April 14th.

A short time later a man was located unresponsive on the side of a road.

A post-mortem exam still needs to be conducted.

Winter Returns to Northwestern Ontario

Old man winter isn't done with us just yet.

Windchills are making it feel like -12 in downtown Kenora this morning, but the situation is worse east of the city where a number of road closures have been reported.

Highway 17 between Ignace and Thunder Bay has been closed since 2:00 this morning due to heavy snow.

Bill Laidlaw from Signal Weather Services says areas to the east of Kenora are definitely being hit the hardest.

Highway 11 between Thunder Bay and Atikokan has also been closed due to the weather.

A number of highways in the area east of Thunder Bay have also been closed due to the snow.

Business Loans up in Kenora

Lake of the Woods Business Incentive Corporation says there are some positive signs of life in Kenora's economy.

In the past year LOWBIC approved 14 business loans worth a total of 1.4 million dollars.

Executive director of LOWBIC Ryan Reynard says they supported both new and existing businesses in the past year.

LOWBIC says the business loans helped to create 71 new jobs in the area and maintained another 77 jobs at existing businesses.

Cat Lake Students Talk About Addiction

Some First Nations children in a remote northwestern Ontario reserve have written a heartbreaking letter to their drug-addicted parents.

The Grade Six students write that they want their parents to stop doing drugs because it hurts their families.

Cat Lake is the epicentre of prescription drug addiction in Canada.

Community leaders figure that between 70 and 80 per cent of the adults are hooked on narcotic pain killers OxyContin or Percocets.

The letter was part of a workshop and was composed with the help of a local band member.

Campbell to Present Tourism Petitions Today at Queen's Park

Ontario's Tourism Minister is going to start receiving a lot of petitions today calling for tourist information centers in Fort Frances, Kenora and Rainy River to remain open.


The petitions were initiated by Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell following the closure announcements two weeks ago.

She says hundreds of people have since signed them.

Campbell is also planning to meet this morning Michael Chan to discuss the center closures.

Municipalities encouraged to approve One Call

Municipalities in the region are being urged to support provincial legislation that would create a one-call centre for people needing to locate underground infrastructure before digging.

Kenora and Fort Frances have pledged to support the One Call system so far.

Luke Skaarup of Union Gas says the system improves safety.

The legislation, though, is being opposed by the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association.

Thistles Gear up for First Game at Allan Cup Tonight

The Kenora Senior Thistles will be doing their final preparations this morning for the Allan Cup in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

The Thistles left on a bus early yesterday morning and will skate in their final  practice before play begins tonight.

Coach John Tresoor says he likes the team they've put together this year.

The Thistles play their first game tonight at 8:00 against the host team from Lloydminster.

Canadian Forces Hit the Street this Weekend

Its not an army occupation, but there certainly will be a military presence in Kenora this weekend.

Members of the 116th Independant Field Battery will be conducting a march through the city tomorrow morning.

The 13 kilometer march will start at 9:00 at Rheault Bay landing on McKenzie Portage Road and make its way through Keewatin, down Lakeview Drive and end up at the Armories on 9th Street North.

The soldiers will be wearing Canadian Army Uniforms, rucksacks and unloaded service rifles.

The march is part of the ARmy's battle fitness test.

Participants will be walking along the side of the road so no traffic will not be affected.

Youth Council Trying to Get Drop-In off the ground

A new youth drop-in center in Kenora may not be a pipe-dream any longer.

The Kenora Youth Council is working to find a suitable location for the center.

Mitch Frenette is the Youth Mayor and says they have been offered a number of

locations, including space at the Kenora Rec. Center.

Frenette says its unlikely they'll get a youth center up and running by the time their term expires in June.

But as long as they are talking about the idea, he feels that's a good start.

Badminton and Swimming Competitions On Tap this Weekend

Badminton and swimming will take center stage this weekend in Kenora.

The Kenora Rockets Badminton Club is holding the 2012 Sangold Supersmash tournament tomorrow up at Beaver Brae.

Players from grade 7 to 12 from northwestern Ontario and Manitoba will be competing in their final event of the season.

Meanwhile, the Kenora Sharks Swim Club will be hosting its annual meet at the Kenora Wellness Center.

Heets begin this afternoon and will wrap up on Sunday.

Teams from Winnipeg and across northwestern Ontario are in the competition.

Extension Granted to Fix Up Municipal Wharves

The City of Kenora is being given a one year extension to use up funding to fix up a number of municipally owned docks and wharfs.

Ten years ago, the federal government provided 1.5 million dollars to fix up the infrastructure on the lake.

The work concluded last year with the refurbishment of the Matheson Street Wharf.

Kenora mayor Dave Canfield says there's still about two or three thousand dollars left in that account and now they have until March of next year to use up the funds

Council Worried about Growing Deer Population

A warmer than normal winter is expected to result in the deer population in the City of Kenora.

City Council is taking steps to try and deal with the problem.

Kenora mayor Dave Canfield says they've tightened up their Feeding of Wild Animals by-law to make it more enforcible.

Councillor Louis Roussin has suggested that a deer cull is in order to deal with the rampant deer population in the city.

Public School Board looks at Transitional Home for Northern Students

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board confirms it's working with the Northern Chiefs Council on estabilishing a transitional home and learning centrer.

The center would be located in the old Pinewood school in Dryden.

Director of Education Jack McMaster says the initiative is geared towards students who are making the jump to High School.

McMaster says the facility will allow aboriginal students to work on literacy and numeracy skills on-site, with an opportunity to enroll in some high school classes.

Fort Hunter Fined for Illegally Killing Moose

A Fort Frances area man has been fined 25-hundred dollars for illegal moose hunting.

Court heard that Myron Huber was hunting at the Turtle Tank cut, east of Mine Centre last October.

He shot a bull moose but he didn't have a seal.

An investigation found that a friend, who wasn't hunting at the time, met Huber and attached his seal to the animal.

Huber has been banned from hunting in Ontario for one year.

Northwestern Ontario's Only Immigration Office to Close

The Northwestern Ontario immigration office in Thunder Bay is closing it's doors next month.

The Public Service Alliance Union represents the two permanent and four part time workers at that office and Judith Monteith-Farrell says it will close to the public on May 31st.

Our immigration support will now come out of Toronto and Ottawa.

OPP Launch Spring Seatbelt Campaign this Weekend

Remember to buckle up!

The Ontario Provincial Police Spring Seatbelt campaign starts on Saturday and runs until Aprill 22nd.

OPP across Northwestern Ontario will be out in full force to ensure motorists are strapped in and child restraints are working properly.

The penalty for not buckling up is 240-dollars and 2-demerit points.

Gravelle Supports local Fire Ranger Crews

The Minister of Natural Resources says a visit to the Northwest Region Forest Fire Management Centre has re-inforced the importance of MNR fire crews.

Michael Gravelle toured the Regional base earlier this week and he admitted that no one is immune from Government belt-tightening.

However, Gravelle stressed that public safety is his top priority.

Gravelle says its shaping up to be a busy forest fire season, with over 40-fires already reported.

Committee shoots down electronic sign board

Just say no to electronic signs.

That continues to be the mantra of the city's property and planning committee.

The committee is pulling the plug on an electronic reader board installed by the Kenora and District Chamber of Commerce to publicize the upcoming Home and Liesure Show.

The sign was located in front of a Park Street Business, but its just on the edge of the Harbortown Center, an area where electronic billboards are banned.

The committee also suggests its a potential distraction to motorists. 
Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield says the Home Show is a big event and he'd like the Chamber to find an alternative location for their electronic reader board.

Senior Thistles Prepare for the Allan Cup

The Kenora Senior Thistles are proudly displaying the Renwick Cup this week.

The Thistles won the Ontario Triple "a" senior championship this past weekend in Dundas.

Thistles Head Coach John Tresoor says the victory will give them a good springboard into the Allan Cup, which begins on Monday.

The Thistles will practice one more time tonight before leaving for Lloydminster, Saskatchewan Sunday morning for the Allan Cup.

Their first game will be Monday night against the host team from Lloydminister.

OPP in Fort Frances Searching for Safeway Gas Bar Robber

Ontario Provincial Police are looking for a suspect in an armed robbery in Fort Frances.

Police say someone held up the Safeway Gas Bar around 10:30 Tuesday night.

OPP say a man entered the store pointing a handgun and he demanded money from the teller.

The suspect receieved an undisclosed amount of cash and he fled the store.

He was wearing a white hooded jacket, blue jeans and white running shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or Fort Frances OPP.

Edmonton Man charged with Trafficking

A 31 year old Edmonton man faces drug charges after being pulled over on the Kenora By-Pass.

The OPP stopped a Ford pick-up truck near the intersection of the Jones Road on Tuesday.

The driver was found to be in possession of a quantity of drugs, including 1.3 pounds of marijuana and just over a half a pound of hashish.

The drugs have a street value of 18 thousand dollars.

Jason Nitsche has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Policing costs down

Policing the city of Kenora is costing less than forecast.

For the second year in a row, the OPP is coming well under budget.

Inspector Dave Lucas says their actual budget in 2011 was 6.1 million dollars, less than the 6.6 million dollars than had initially been forecast. 

Lucas says over the past few years, they have been budgeting about 9 percent for overtime purposes, but this year, they'll drop that figure down to about  eight percent to get closer to their targeted budget figure.

Development Commission Ready to Move on Lakewood

The dream of a new adult education center is closer to reality.

The Lake of the Woods Economic Development Commission is working on plans to purchase Lakewood School after the public schooo board declared the facility suplus earlier this week.

Chair of the Training and Educatin Committee Geordie McEwan says there's already been a lot of interest expressed in the training center.

The commission now has 90 days to work up a bid for the property and will be working with the City of Kenora to initially help fund the purchase.

Rickford cheers the Demise of the Long Gun Registry

Local gun owners are not impacted by a court injunction in Quebec questioning the Federal Government's ability of destroying information contained in the long gun registry.

The registry has officially been abolished and Police no longer have the power to check the registry for any verification purposes.

Kenora MP Greg Rickford says he will be following the situation in Quebec closely.

Rickford stresses local residents no longer have to register their long guns.

Council asked to Support Muskies on Main

Forget Bears on Broadway. How about Muskies on Main.

That's the concept being promoted by the Lake of the Woods Arts Collective.

Irene McQuaig made her pitch to city council yesterday and says they hope to make a number of fish as a fundraiser.

McQuaig says the muskies would sell for about 15 hundred to two thousand dollars.

She estimates they would be able to raise about 25 thousand dollars for a local charity, which still has to be selected.

Richards has three point night in Playoff Opener

Mike Richards had a goal and two assists to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a surprise 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks in game one of their first round play-off series.

Richards says while it was nice to contribute, he believes the team can play better.

The series resumes Friday night in Vancover witht he Kings leading one game to none.

High School Badminton Players advance to NWOSSA

Kenora badminton stars claimed five gold medals at the NorWOSSA championships in Dryden yesterday.

Patrick Van Bellingham from Thomas Aquinas placed first in the boys seniors division, while Alexis Lesperance from Beaver Brae won the senior girls crown.

Tyler Neil took the junior boys title, while the Broncos junior boys tandem of Rogers and Smith won the junior boys double division.

In the junior mixed event, Beaver Brae's Iverson and Sparkman also won gold.

The top two finishers in each division now move on to the NWOSSA finals next week in Thunder Bay.

Small Earthquake registered north of Kenora

Residents of the Dalles might have felt the earth move under their feet.

The National Research Council says there was a small earthquake located about 12 kilometers north of Kenora early yesterday morning.

According the government agency, the quake registered 1.7 on the Richter scale at 12:08 in the morning.

There has been no reports of anyone even noticing the mild tremblor.

Smoking Restrictions in Store at Lake of the Woods District Hospital

Lake of the Woods District Hospital is going ahead with plans to make their facilities smoke-free places.

Starting April 22nd, each of the hospital four buildings will have only one smoking area.

Hospital CEO Marc Belcaen says they are actually going above and beyond what's contained in Ontario's Smoke-Free Act.

The hospital has also set up a Tobacco Usage Review Group, that will work towards making the hospital a completely smoke-free zone in the next year or so.

Joyride causes Extensive Damage

Who knew a teenaged girl could cause this much damage.

The OPP say a female youth has been charged following a destructive joyride in Keewatin.

Police say the teen took a pick-up truck that was left idling in a driveway Monday night.

She sped away and struck several parked cars before losing control of the vehicle.

She eventually ran into a house, causing extensive damage to the residence.

The girl fled the scene, but was picked up by officers a short time later.

She's been charged with theft over five thousand dollars and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Lakewood School Declared Surplus

It's official. Lakewood School is going on the auction block.

Trustees voted unamimously to declare the elementary school surplus to the board's needs last night.

Superintendant of Business Dean Carrie says just because they've decided to start the process, doesn't mean there's no turning back.

In conjuction with the Lakewood decision, the board has also agreed to start consulting with parents about the concept of moving grade seven and eight students in Kenora up to Beaver Brae.

Superintendant of Education, Sean Monteith says they will be starting that process in the next couple of weeks.

Canfield Questions Tourist Center Closures

Its a mistake.

Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield believes the provincial government made a math error when it decided to close down the three Tourist Information centers at the border crossings in the Kenora-Rainy River area.

Canfield says its clear, the border crossings locally are busier than elsewhere in northwestern Ontario.

Canfield adds that municipal officials have been in talks with the Ministry of Tourism to provide Ontario Travel Information year round at the Discovery Center, but they still haven't taken the city up on that offer.

Northwest Business Center Hits the Road

The Manager of the Northwest Business Centre is hitting the road in a bid to raise the profile of the Dryden and Kenora based organization.

Diane Schwartz-Williams is taking her road show to Sioux Lookout this week.

She will be meeting with Economic Development offiicials from across the Kenora and Rainy River District to discuss cultural and art opportunities.

Two men charged in downtown Robbery

Two Fort France men has been arrested following a robbery in downtown Kenora.

The OPP say the incident took place Saturday night around 11:00 when two men accosted a man at a downtown insta-teller.

They initially asked the man for a light, but then struck him, knocking him to the ground.

They took the victims wallet, and left the scene.

Both suspects were arrested about an hour later with the help of an OPP canine unit.

28 year old Cote McGinnis and 30 year old John George have both been charged with robbery.

They appeared yesterday in Kenora Court on the charges.

NorWOSSA Badminton Finals On Tap in Dryden

Beaver Brae and Thomas Aquinas badminton players will be going for gold today.

The NorWOSSA finals will be taking place in Dryden.

The top six ranked players and teams in each division will do battle starting at 9:30 this morning.

Medals for boys and girls singles, doubles and mixed doubles will be handed out this afternoon.
