Blood Donor Clinic Today

It's day two of the Canadian Blood Services Blood Donor Clinic in Kenora.


Spokesperson Michael Hyduk says yesterday's clinic was a big sucess with 126 units of blood collected.


Hyduk says they welcome walk ins and appointments.



The clinic runs from 9:30 to 12:30 today. To make an appointment to donate blood call 1-888-2-Donate.



The amount of blood collected yesterday can help up to 378 people.

The race is on for Canadian cities wanting to claim a spot on the new Canuck edition of Monopoly.

Kenora is currently in the number 8 spot for wild card cities.

White River Mill

Officials with the dormant White River sawmill are hoping to reinvent themselves in 2010.

Company President Jeff Butler plans to expand the operation with wood pellet technology and value-added products.

White River Forest Products are hopeful of securing the Crown fibre supply necessary to press ahead with a 90-million dollar project that would also see an existing co-generation plant powered up from 7.5 megawatts to 20.

Ontario Cabinet Shuffle

Premier Dalton McGuinty is defending his decision to add theaboriginal affairs portfolio to Attorney General Chris Bentley's duties.

McGuinty says his government isn't amalgamating or merging ministries, but rather, having one minister in charge of separate ministries.

Yesterday's shuffle brings four new faces to the cabinet table as McGuinty sets his Liberal's lineup ahead of the 2011 election.

Newcomers include Sofia Aggelonitis as minister of consumer services, Bruce's Carol Mitchell inagriculture, Linda Jeffrey in natural resources and Dr. Eric Hoskinsin citizenship and immigration.

Grandparent Scam Dryden

Dryden Police are disheartened to learn that a local resident has fallen victim to a scam targeting seniors.

Police say a grandparent receives a phone call from a con-artist claiming to be one of the grandchildren.

The caller goes on to say they are in some kind of trouble and need money immediately and don't want anyone else to know.

A local senior lost a large sum of money in this scam and Police ask that you contact other family members to confirm the whereabouts of any relative before sending cash.

Mining Protest

A First Nation in northwestern Ontario is expected to set up barriers today at airstrips to block exploration activity at what could be the world's biggest source of stainless steel.

Marten Falls Chief Eli Moonias says he is frustrated that somecompanies working at the Ring of Fire chromite deposit are ignoring his community's efforts to benefit from the development.

He says they want them to use their air strip and winter road atthe fly-in reserve 500 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.

Moonias says they are not against mining and want to do business with the companies.

Driven to Quit

The Canadian Cancer Society and Northwestern Health Unit is looking for smoker to take part in the annual Driven to Quit Challenge.

The campaign encourages smokers to kick the habit by offering a chance to win a new vehicle.

Becky Holden of the Northwestern Health Unit says people can register at local Health Unit offices or online at driven-to-quit.ca

More than forty people in the northwest have already register for the contest.

Making Kenora Home

The Making Kenora Home Committee says its continuing to seek funding for a low-cost housing project.

Nan Normand is a spokesperson for the committee and says unfortunately they have not been able to secure any funding for the project.

Normand says the good news is that both the federal and provincial levels of government are continuing to keep them up to date on any new funding programs and she's hopeful they may be able to secure funding in the months ahead.

Kenora Town Island

The City of Kenora is a step closer to swapping Town Island on Lake of the Woods with the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Last night, city council declared the island surplus to municipal purposes.

Councillor Dave McCann says they have been talking with the MNR about swapping crown land of similar value.

McCann says the property the MNR is considering swapping for Town Island lies south of Dufresne Island near the Kenora By-Pass.

He suggests it could still take several months before the land transaction is complete.

Downtown Revitalization

It's going to cost a little more than expected to draft plans for phase two of the downtown revitalization project.

Kenora City council will be meeting Monday to approve the tender by the KGS group for the final design and contract administration.

Operations Manager Rick Perchuck says the design contract will cost about 400 thousand dollars, but another 45 thousand dollars will have to be added to that cost in order to come up with plans to cover the festival site with a tent.

Rick Perchuck says he wasn't expecting the added charge but council is expected to approve the added costs at Monday nights open meeting.

Brad Duguid Thunder Bay

Ontario's Native Affairs Minister Brad Duguid says building strong First Nations economies will help the province's economy.

Duguid was in Thunder Bay where area first nation leaders have begun working on a long-term strategic plan.

Duguid says the introduction of the Green Energy act and the new Mining Act are providing increased business opportunities for First Nations.

Drug Bust Sioux Lookout

A large drug bust in Sioux Lookout.OPP searched a Sioux Lookout home and recovered 44-thousand dollars worth of Oxycontin and Oxycocet pills.

Police say 26-year-old Leonid Shipner of Sioux Lookout and 44-year-old Shane Presley of Missisauga are both in custody and face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of marihuana.

Both men will appear in court next Monday.

Kenora Sign By Law

Kenora's Property and Planning Commitee has decided to scrap its proposed changes to the sing by-law.

Committee Chair Councilor Wendy Cuthbert says they need to develop a bylaw that is more business and user friendly.

Beaver Creek Rance Owner Amanda Boucha presented her concerns to the committee on Tuesday.

The new draft sign bylaw will be presented for public review and comment at an information session in the near future.

Hope Leaves KPDSB

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has a bit of an administrative void to fill.

Larry Hope's last day on the job as Director of Education was January 12th.

Hope says he enjoyed each one of his 20 years as an employee of the public school board.

Hope is moving to Lindsey where he will become the Director of Education with the Trillium Lakelands School Board.

The local school board has started interviewing candidates to replace Hope as Director of Education.
