Haiti Pennies Fundraiser

You can help Haiti.

Dig into your couch cushions and gather your loose change, St. Thomas Aquinas is collecting for the Red Cross.

Penny jars can be found at area banks, schools and local businesses.

T.A.'s goal is to raise a thousand dollars for the Red Cross in Haiti.

OFSC Trails

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is preaching to the converted.

The OFSC is promoting snowmobiling across the province including Northwestern Ontario.

Spokesperson Josh Grills says Kenora has some of the best snowmobiling trails in the whole of Ontario.

Jets Alumni Game Sunday

NHL Alumni will be taking to the ice this Sunday in Kenora.

The Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends will be playing the Kenora Paramedics in a charity hockey game.

Goalie Jimmy Mac says hockey fans will have a good time at today's game.

Money raised will go towards Triple Play.

Game time is 2:00 at the Kenora Recreation Centre.

Houston Lake Mining

Houston Lake Mining continues to receive encouraging results from its Dog Paw Lake gold property near Kenora.

The Sudbury based company received positive assay results from an 18 channel sample exploration project on the property.

Dogpaw has an extensive exploration history dating back to the 1940’s.

At least five main gold zones and ten documented gold occurrences have been discovered so far on the property.

Impaired Driver

A 36 year old Winnipeg Man has been charged with impaired driving after being pulled over by police near Rushing River.

The OPP say they were contacted about a possible drunk driver operating a U-Haul as it was leaving a gas station in Kenora early this morning.

The driver was finally located around 4:30 a.m. on Highway 71.

He was arrested and officers discovered that he had also been disqualified from driving.

Pest Management

The City of Kenora has received a final report on the Integrated Pest Management experiment
conducted at Central Park over the past three years.

The report says the project has proven to be a success.

The main goal of this project was to limit pesticide use and to educate the general public.

The committee used a variety of strategies for controlling weeds, including mechanical devices, physical devices, genetic, biological, cultural management, and chemical management as a last resort.

Mischief Kenora

The Kenora Detachment says its concerned with a recent rash of mischief incidents.

There have been numerous reports of people throwing items like picnictables on the ice.

The most recent incident ws reported on Lake of the Woods near Huskythe Musky.

Police say they worried that some well-meaning member of the publicmight try to retrieve the table and fall through the ice.

Nursing Program Update

Confederation College and Lakehead University are now targeting this fall as the resumption of a community-based nursing program.

The program allows students to earn L-U's Bachelor of Nursing Program at the College's regional campuses, including Fort Frances.

Speaking from Thunder Bay, College president Pat Lang says they need 32 students registered.

Rickford on NDP HST

Thunder Bay area MP's continue to tour the area speaking out against the harmonized sales tax.

However, Kenora MP Greg Rickford stresses the NDP members are wasting their time as the tax is a Provincial issue.

The Conservative member says they need to get their priorities straight.

A HST Town Hall meeting was held in Kenora yesterday.

MNR Restructuring

The Ministry of Natural Resources has completed an internal re-organization.

The Natural Resources Management Division has been eliminated and fish andwildlife responsibilities are now being split between two new divisions.

Greg Ferrant from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters says he's notsure what to make of the changes.

Ferrant says there are two new divisions within the MNR, one dealing with policy issues, the other with Provincial Services.
