Pikangikum Help

Two trailers filled with several bags and boxes of children's clothing, diapers and food items are on their way to Pikagikum First Nation.

The items were collected last month by Family and Children Services Rainy River.

Constable Anne McCoy is the O-P-P is helping FACS with the delivery.

Six employees with FACS are also making the day long journey to the remote community north of Red Lake.

Municipal Elections

Local residents have nine months to decide whether they want to run in this year's municipal elections.

Nomination forms have been available since January 4th, but so far, no-one has expressed interest in any of the races.

Joanne McMillin is the city clerk and says people can drop by her office for the nomination forms.

Elections will be held for Kenora city council, mayor, local school boards and the Lake of the Woods Hospital Board on October 25th.

Fort Frances Fatal

The OPP in Fort Frances are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a one month old baby girl.

Rhianna Gosselin-Allen passed away at a Winnipeg Hospital on Monday.

A post-mortem exam was conducted in Winnipeg onTuesday, but the results of the autopsy are not yet complete.

Members of the North West Region Forensic Identification Unit are assisting the OPP's Criminal Investigation Branch in Kenora.

OPP Unsolved Homocides

OPP in Northwestern Ontario are actively seeking new information into 11 unsolved homocide cases.

The murder of Susan Assin in Kenora in 1974 is one of the cases on the OPP's website.

Sgt. Shelley Garr says a variety of information on the unsolved cases is available to the public on their site opp.ca

The cases date back to the 1960's.

Richards Golf Tournament

In addition to captaining the Philadelphia Flyers and being named to the Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey Team, Mike Richards is going to find some timeto organize a new charity golf tournament.

The tournament will take place at the Kenora Golf and Country Club on July 15th.

He's not sure whether it will become an annual event or not.

Proceeds will go to the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional CommunityFoundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

December Weather Normal

Despite frigid temperatures over the past couple of weeks, the weather this past December was pretty average.

Environment Canada Climatologist, Geoff Coulson says while we received a bit more snow than usual, temperatures were pretty normal.

Coulson says the cold, clear weather will likely remain with us for the forseeable future, with temperatures moderating slightly by the weekend.

Rickford on Proroguing Parliment



The Member of Parliament for the Kenora Riding is defending the government's decision to suspend the current sitting of the House of Commons.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogued parliament until March which will kill a number of bills currently on the order paper.
Greg Rickford says that will not affect all bills, including the private members bill to kill the Federal Long gun Registry.
Rickford suggests the delay in the next sitting of Parliament will mean that he will be able to spend more time in the riding meeting with his constituents.

OPP Ride Check Stats

The Kenora Detachment of the OPP was kept busy with its festive RIDE programover the past five weeks.

The annual campaign wrapped up on Saturday and police say they stopped over 13 thousand vehicles in the Kenora area.

A total of eight people were charged with impaired driving or refusing to provide a breath sample.

Officers also issued five three-day suspensions for motorists registering a warning at roadside check stops.

Northwestern Ontario Buses

The provincial government is rejecting calls to extend Ontario Northland bus service into northwestern Ontario.

Starting in the middle of January, Greyhound will be reducing service in this region to just bus a day from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie.

Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle says he'd rather see the private sector take the initiative, rather than the provincial government.

The provincial government subsidizes bus service to northeastern Ontario to the tune of 25 million dollars a year, and some opposition members at Queen's Park feel northwestern Ontario deserves similar treatment.

Economic Development Commission Kenora

2009 was a busy year for construction in the City of Kenora.

Millions of dollars flowed into the community from the federal and provincial governments for infrastructure spending.

Geordie McEwan is a director of the Lake of the Woods Economic Development Commission and says they worked hard to secure that funding.

Some of the projects that received funding this year were reconstruction of Highway 17 west in
Kenora, the replacement of the submarine waterline, the Discovery Center in Norman and Phase
Two of the Downtown Revitalization project.

Olympic Torch Relay Kenora


Despite frigid temperatures, the City of Kenora gave the Olympic Torch a warm welcome.

About three thousand people crammed into the Harborfront Parking Lot to witness the lighting of the Olympic Cauldrun.


Wayne Fiecek was the final Olympic Torch bearer and says it was an experienceof a lifetime.

The Olympic Torch will have two final stops today before leaving Ontario.

Ten people will carry the flame from Lake of the Woods Museum and over to Keewatin.


The Torch will also roll into the Shoal Lake #39 First Nation later this morning.

Sexual Assault Charge

A routine Ride stop resulted in a variety of charges being laid against several Kenora area residents.

OPP stopped a vehicle that attempted to bypass a RIDE checkpoint on December 19th.

The driver 26 year old Jim Scott of White Dog First Nation was charged with impaired driving.

Further investigation led to two of the vehicle's passengers being arrested for various bail violations.

The 15 year old female passenger told police she had been sexually assaulted earlier that evening by one of the male passengers.

35 year old Gerald Scott has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

OPP say further charges may be pending.

Local Hockey

It was a Weekend split for the Kenora Senior Thistles against the Fort Frances Thunderhawks at Thistle Arena.

Saturday night the Thistles dominated Fort Frances winning 7-0.

Jeff Richards and Sean Hughes led Kenora with 2 goals each.

Sunday afternoon it was the Thunderhawks pulling off a 4-3 win.

The two teams will meet again January 9th when the rivalry moves to Fort Frances.

Olympic Torch In Kenora Tonight

Excitement is starting to build as the Olympic Torch gets ready to make its way toKenora this evening.

A total of seven people will carry the torch from Mikana Way down to the Harborfront starting at about 6:45 tonight.

Buck Matiowski is a member of the Olympic Torch local organizing committee and says they will have a nice added touch for the Kenora celebration.

The Olympic Torch will make its way down to the Kenora Harborfront at around 7:00 this evening.

It will then leave tomorrow morning starting at 7:00 from the Lake of the Woods Museum, with 10 more people scheduled to carry the torch.

Drive Test Workers Back on Job

DriveTest workers will be back to work this morning after a long strike.

Workers have ratified a new contract after a strike that hadprevented many Ontario residents from getting new drivers' licenses or renewals since August.

Some 590 DriveTest employees walked off the job August 21st aftertalks with their employer, Serco, collapsed.

New Tourism Officer

The City of Kenora has hired a Tourism Officer to work with the Economic Development Team.

Heather Paterson starts her new job today and has been given the task of implementing the City's tourism plan.

Economic Development Manager Jennifer Findlay says it was extremly important to hire a Tourism Officer.

Paterson is a Manitoba import but has been coming to Kenora all her life.

STR Snowmobiling Season

The Sunset Trail Riders Club is gearing up for the 2010 snowmobiling season.

President Ken Bracken says they've been hard at work grooming area trails and preparing signage.

Bracken notes they've also had a little more financial help than previous years.

The STR recently received funding from from the OFSC, and the Federal Government to rebuild the Ethelma Lake bridge.

Trail permit sales are slightly down from last year, but Bracken notes that's probably due to
November and December's warmer than normal weather.

Permits are available for purchase throughout the snowmobile season.

More Drugs

Nishawbe Aski Police have intercepted a package of illegal drugs destined for the Fort Hope First Nation.

Police seized 36 hundred dollars worth of Percocet and Oxycontin pills, at the First Hope Airport.

36 yr old Maureen Wabano of Fort Hope was charged with Possession for the Purpose of
Trafficking, she will appear in court on Febuary 11.

Fort Hope is located 385 kilometers norteast of Thunder Bay.

Rafferty on Proroguing Parliment

Opposition M-P's are accusing Prime Minister Harper of abusing his power by suspending Parliament.

The commons won't return to business until March which Thunder Bay-Rainy River M-P John Rafferty says it makes no sense.

Rafferty says the delay is Harper's attempt to avoid discussion on the Afghan detainee issue.

OPP RIDE Checks

O-P-P will continue to maintain a zero tolerance approach towards drinking and driving this new year's eve.

Constable Anne McCoy says police will be out in force tonight.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Julian Fantino will be in Kenora today to help with the spot checks on the Keewatin Bridge this afternoon.
