Kenora-Rainy River M-P-P Howard Hampton isn't all that excited about the creation of the new Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.
Hampton says moving the responsibility of forestry from the Ministry of Natural Resources does little to help the industry.
Hampton calls today's announcement as nothing more than cosmetic without a real plan for forest industry.
Meanwhile, Minister Michael Gravelle says is looking forward to the challenges the lie ahead in his new role.
Gravelle says the move of forestry from the Natural Resources Ministry is a sign that the province recognizes the importance of the industry to northern Ontario.

The Standard Insurance will continue to provide the City of Kenora its insurance.
The winning bid came in at a thousand dollars more than Lake of the Woods Insurance.
Councillor Chris Van Wallenghem says they hired a consultant because they're not insurance experts.
Meanwhile, Lake of the Woods Insurance Broker Dave Blake feels they had the better bid.

LCBO Strike Averted
Both sides in the L-C-B-O dispute have agreed to stick a cork instrike plans and keep bargaining until they strike a deal.
But if either side walks away from the table, a strike that was scheduled to begin this morning would likely be back on.
An OP-SEU official says the union would not be extending the strike deadline if it didn't feel it could forge a new contractthrough negotiation.

MNR Fire Update
The forest fire hazard is high to extreme across much of Northwestern Ontario.The Ministry of Natural Resources is dealing with 24-active fires, most in the Far North.
Information Officer Debbie MacLean says fortunately they have received some help.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union says it was pleased with the response to a community forum on the local economy.
About 20 people attended yesterday's meeting at the Best Western Lakeside Inn.
James Tocker is OPSEU's vice-president for northwestern Ontario andsays he was surprised by the positive outlook from most of the peoplewho attended.
Tocker says the input they received at the meeting will be compiled into one large report, which will ultimately be presented to the provincialgovernment.

Visitor Restrictions Lifted Hospital
After a couple of weeks of being closed to the public, the Lake of the Woods DistrictHospital has opened its doors again to visitors.
Director of Patient Care, Leslie Brown says they were able to re-open the health care facility yesterday afternoon.
Brown says the limited visiting hours will take effect from 2pm to 8:30pm for the rest of this week.

H1N1 Flu Cases
The Ministry of Health and Health Canada are being urged to mobilizetheir resources to deal with the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in firstnation communities in northern Ontario.

LOW Control Board Open House
Water levels on the Winnipeg River are higher than normal according to the Lake of the Woods Control Board.
Spokesperson Rick Cousins says they'll be discussing water levels on the lake and the river at their open house today.

The City of Kenora will get getting two million dollars from the provincial government to proceed with phase two of the downtown revitalizationproject.
The funding was announced yesterday by the Northern Ontario HeritageFund.

Paved Trail
Work has nearly been completed on a new wheelchair accessible walking trail to Rabbit Lake.
A portion of the trail from Nairn Avenue to Rabbit Lake was paved this week.
A number of groups got together to help fundraise for the project,including the Kenora Association for Community Living, the Lake of theWoods Regional Community Foundation and the Rotary Club.

The OPP have released the name of a person killed in a single vehicle crash on Highway 17-A on Friday morning.
65 year old Archie Wilcott sustained fatal injuries after his motorcycleleft the road and hit a rock cut.
Police say they have have concluded their investigation in to thefatality, but are unsure why the motorcycle left the road.

Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Crews are keeping an eye on lightning caused fires in the region.
There are currently 28 active fires in the Northwest.
Many of the lightning caused fires are burning in the far north.
The blazes have been assessed and do not pose a threat to any communities or values.
Area communities may notice smokey conditions depending on the wind direction.

Fire and Emergency Services Coordinator Warren Brinkman says some kind of vegetable oil was dumped along a route from the city hall parking lot to the public works area.

Deer Lake fatality
OPP and Nishnawbe-Aski Police are investigating the death of a 44-year-old man in Deer Lake First Nation, north of Red Lake.
Henry Kakekagumick was found along a roadway in the community and was transported to Hospital in Winnipeg where he was pronounced dead.
A post-mortum is being conducted at the Health Sciences Centre.
Charges have yet to be laid.

It's been over 2 years since the Making Kenora Home Committee was struck.
In that time, the group has made progress on four out of the eight recommendations they created.

Swine Flu in the Far North
The swine flu has hit First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario, with more than 100 sick on the Sandy Lake reserve.
Nurses and a doctor are distributing the antiviral drug Tamiflu to the sick.
Authorities have asked people from Sandy Lake to not travel to other First Nations communities in the region to keep the virus from spreading.

Hospital Foundation Exec Resigns
The Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation is welcoming a new Director.
Former Sioux Narrows/Nestor Falls Economic Development Officer Megan Barr will be filling the role.
Outgoing Director Darrily Michiluk says he enjoyed his time at the helm of the foundation.
Michiluk is stepping down to further his education at the University of Toronto.

Grassy Narrows Walk
A number of members of the Grassy Narrows First Nation are scheduled to resume their mach to Ottawa today.
The walk is a continuation of a march that began on Earth Day from Grassy to Kenora.
The march in part has to do with clear-cut logging activity that hastaken place surrounding the community in recent years.
Members of the Treaty Three Coalition Group says they also will join the Grassy Narrows residents on their cross-province walk.

The NDP's forestry critic is demanding the Federal Government protect workers pensions.
Various forest industry companies have failed to pay out severance and pension packages.
Thunder Bay Rainy River MP John Rafferty says the Conservative Government could help workers and protect their hard earned pensions.
Recently, Kenora Forest Products failed to make a payment deadline for severance packages.
Abitibi Bowater also stopped paying pensions during its time under bankruptcy court protection.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says its seen good successwith its adult education classes, after re-instating the program this year.
A total of 30 students are scheduled to graduate later this month.

Cossais says in all, they had 275 students enrolled in adult educationclasses this year in five locations within the board.

Rent Bank gets money

Northwestern Ontario's "Rent Bank" will be a little bit richer thanks to the Provincial Government.
The Kenora District Services Board received just over 18 thousand dollars for their rent bank.
Ontario Works Director Dianne Apland says the bank is for low income families.
Apland notes the recession has meant an increase in residents applying for funds from the rent bank.

Hospital Funding and Construction

The Provincial Government is helping the Lake of the Woods Hospital replace its aging air conditioning system.
The hospital recently received its share of the annual Hospital Infrastructure Renewal fund.
C.E.O. Marc Balcaen says they saw an increase in their funds, with 191 thousand dollars coming their way.
Balcaen notes they won't start the project until September since it will interfere with the existing cooling system.
Meanwhile, Construction work on phase 2 of the Lake of the Woods Hospital's capital redevelopment project is almost complete.
The hospital used Provincial Government funds to install new nurse call systems, and safety alarms.
C.E.O. Marc Balcaen says its all part of a 4.9 million dollar 3 phase project.
Balcaen notes they've asked the Provincial Government to hurry up the process so they can start construction before the colder months.
Phase 3 includes replacements to the back up emergency generating system and bulk oxygen operating system.
Child Minding Center

The Kenora Rec. Center will continue to have a place for families to care for their children while using the facility.
But it will no longer be staffed.
The city cut funding for the Child Minding Center in the budget, but Recreation Manager, Colleen Neil says they want to keep the space available for families to use.
Neil says it will be free to use the space, but it will be available to rent for birthday parties or other special occasions.

The City of Kenora's Heritage Committee wants several buildings added to the municipal registry of cultural heritage properties.
The Best Western Lakeside Inn, Keewatin Memorial Building, Moncrief Barn and Del Art Manor are just some of the area properties that are steaped in local history.
Chair Laurie Nelson says they look at the buildings that are on the property.
Nelson notes properties on the registry are not subject to any construction rules or regulations.

KPDSB OSSLT Results

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy test results are in, and the Keewatin Patricia District School board scored just below the Provincial Average.
The public board saw a 3 percent decrease in their OSSLT test success rate.
Director of Education Larry Hope says their board wide score was 72 percent.
Beaver Brae came in at 73 percent, while Dryden improved their score at 80 percent.
The most drastic decrease in OSSLT results was in Ignace, with their marks going from 89 to 33 percent.
Meanwhile, the Kenora Catholic District School Board scored just 10 percent below the Provincial OSSLT average.
75 percent of St. Thomas Aquinas students were succesful with their first attempt at the literacy test.
The board's average dropped this year from 86 percent in 2008, to this year's 75.

The City of Kenora is considering some changes to its Taxi Law.
Local cab companies have been lobbying to allow older vehicles on the road.
Eric Lovas from Co-Ot Taxi says having a 10 year old vehicle on the road doesn't necessarily mean its unsafe.
Council has agreed to increase the age of taxis on the road from a maximum of six years, up to 10 years, as requested by local cab companies.

A stubborn respiratory illness has forced Lake of the Woods District Hospital to close the facility to all visitors.
Leslie Brown is the head of patient care and says they decided to impose the visitor ban Tuesday afternoon because the illness seems to be spreading.
Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home has also closed its doors to visitors due to the respiratory illness.
Brown says they don't known when they might be able to lift the visitor ban.

Redditt is getting extra funding from the federal government to help out with its community water project.
The community has been promised another 121 thousand dollars from the federal government to install a membrane filtration system.
Jack Martin is chair of the Redditt Services Board and says the community has been working hard to get the project off the ground.
The total project will cost about 270 thousand dollars.

City Potholes

The cool, damp weather this spring has been playing havoc with the city's roads.
Operations manager Rick Perchuck says pot holes has been particularly bad.
He says one of the options they are looking at is a new truck, that fills potholes more efficiently.
Perchuck says the trucks tend to do a much better job of filling potholes.
At this point, he says they are looking at leasing a truck rather than buying one.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is planning to conduct of review of its elementary schools in the City of Kenora.
Director of Education, Larry Hope says declining enrolment means that a number of schools are being underutilized.
He says the review doesn't necessarily mean the closing of any schools in the city.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is looking at a big increase in its budget this year.
Trustees were presented the draft budget last night, which included 96.7 million dollars in spending.
Superintendant of Business, Dean Carrie says that's an increase from this years budget, which was projected at 89.8 million.
Carrie adds that due to a projected drop in enrolment next year, they had to cut about 900 thousand dollars in spending from the budget to ensure that it was balanced.

Drive to Work Caravan Kicks off in Kenora

The Ontario Federation of Labour is standing up for Ontario's workers.
The OFL kicked off its Drive to Work Caravan this morning in Kenora.
President Wayne Samuelson says they intend to demand the Premier take action to protect workers pensions, benefits and severance pay.
The OFL's caravan will be making stops in Dryden and Fort Frances later today.
The caravan will arrive in Toronto on June 25th.
Kenora Assault

The OPP have arrested a suspect in connection to an assault in Memorial Park in downtown Kenora.
The assault took place late last Thursday evening.
Police say the victim was taken to the Winnipeg Health Science Center for treatment of what were believed to be life-threatening injuries.
He is now reported to be in stable condition.
The OPP's Northwest Regional Crime Unit was brought in and a 28 year old Sioux Lookout man has been charged with aggravated assault.
Joseph William Wesley is currently in custody at the Kenora Jail is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Kenora Man Charged

A 25 year old Kenora man is facing a number of charges after a motor vehicle collision on Valley Drive.
On Thursday, Kenora OPP and Kenora Police were advised that someone was driving erratically and had hit a tree.
Police found the vehicle still running against the tree, and were advised by witnesses a number of males had fled on foot.
Two of the males were located shortly after and it was determined that while fleeing from the scene, one of the men assaulted a citizen walking his dog.
The investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Kenora OPP or Crimestoppers.

The Wait Continues for Hockey Day
Kenora will continue to wait to find out their fate when it comes to hosting 2010's Hockey Day In Canada broadcast.
CBC Producers contacted the City this morning to tell them they will make their final announcement on Tuesday at noon.
Councillor Chris Van Wallenghem says local residents put their best foot forward, and CBC officials were
suitably impressed by Kenora's enthusiasm.
UV Disinfection System

The City of Kenora is spending over a million dollars on a new UV disinfection system at the Sewage Treatment Plant.
Operations Chair Dave McCann says they're buying the new system because it will be mandatory starting in December.

For the past 4-years, the Northwestern Health Unit program has done major work in convincing kids to stay away from tobacco products.

Recreation Centre Funding

The ice plant at the Kenora Rec. Center is due for some upgrades and the City of Kenora is hoping the federal and provincial governments will provide funding for the project.
This morning council held a special meeting in part to apply for Recreational Infrastrucuture funding that's being made available by the Province of Ontario and the feds.
Councillor Chris Van Wallenghem says some of the equipment is very old and inefficient.
Van Wallenghem says the payback for the projects is three to four years on energy savings alone.
The city has also applied for new energy efficient lighting for the Rec. Center.

Building new non-senior single occupancy units in Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout is high on the list contained in a report on Social Housing Needs in the Kenora District.
Consultant Peder Olson has presented his findings to the District Services Board.
KDSB Chair Rory McMillan says the spaces are needed but cautions they need to review all options before speding capital funds.
The report also suggests the Board refrain from building new units in smaller communities, a notion some on the Board question.

The Ministry of Northern Development has unveilled a new entrepreneur program.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund will be offering up to 125-thousand dollars in conditional grant funding.
Minister Michael Gravelle notes the Northern Entrepreneur Program was one of the Rosehart Report's key recommendations.
Residents of any age can apply for the funding immediately and can find an application form online at the Ministry website.
CBC Hockey Day In Canada

Kenora is one of three communities in the running to host the annual event.

Common Ground Research Forum

The Federal Government is putting a million dollars into Kenora's Common Ground initiative.
A research forum is being created that will include the City of Kenora, Grand Council Treaty #3, and the University of Manitoba.
Minister of Science and Technology Gary Goodyear says the research will be based around the former Abitibi Bowater lands.
Goodyear notes the next step will be to hire a project coordinator.
The million dollars will be used over the next six years.

Brandie Doudiet and Alexandra Paul are two of sixty students across the province selected to the new Minister's Student Advisory Council.
Doudiet says they will have a chance to voice their concerns and discuss education issues in Northwestern Ontario.

Fisheries Study

Provincial fisheries staff will be out on nearly 100 area lakes this summer.
They'll be monitoring the lakes’ health and gathering information to help manage fish populations effectively.
Crews will survey lakes north of Ignace, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Kenora by plane and boat beginning tomorrow, ollecting water samples and setting nets.
Drug Bust

The RCMP have arrested a 54 year old truck driver for trafficking marijuana.
Police say shortly before midnight last Friday, an eastbound tractor trailor unitchecked into the West Hawk Lake Inspection Station.
The driver agreed to a voluntary search of his trailor, which was destined for southern Ontario.
Several boxes containing 175 pounds of marijuana were discovered.
The drugs have a street value of over 400 thousand dollars.
The driver, from Aurora, Ontario was arrested and is due to appear in Winnipeg Court on July 23rd to face charges.
Water Levels

The Lake of the Woods Control Board will be increasing outflow from the Norman Dam into the Winnipeg River once again this week.
The Control Board says due to recent wet weather, they will be increasing the amount of water through the Norman Dam to 1250 cubic meters per second.
That's an increase from the current level of 1150 cubic meters.
The lake rose about two inches this past week and is expected to go up another two to four inches during the next seven days.
Long Gun Amnesty

The federal government has once again extended its amnesty for long gun owners who haven't registered their firearms.
Treasury Board President Vic Toews says it's still the government's intention to kill the registry for long gun owners, something opposition parties would have to agree to in the minority Parliament.
But for now the government is giving people another year to sign up their unregistered, non-restricted firearms.
It's also waiving fees for licence renewals and upgrades for another year.
Toews calls the registry a waste of money that penalizes law-abiding citizens, but its supporters say it helps police crack down on crime.
Normandie Hotel Burns

The Historic Normandie Hotel and Restaurant is no more.
OPP were called to the Front Street building in Nipigon early Saturday morning.
The Hotel was destroyed as well as two adjacent homes.
No one was staying at the hotel, as it has not opened for the summer season.

Highway 17 twinning

Premier Dalton McGuinty says work to double lane Highway 17 west of Kenora has already started.
McGuinty made his first visit as premier to Kenora on Friday and along with prime minister Stephen Harper, promised 100 million dollars to begin the project next year.
The premier says the route planning process has already started.
The route planning for the entire 40 kilometer route is expected to take about a year and a half to complete.
Ten kilometers of the Trans-Canada east of the Manitoba border will be the first section to be twinned.

Work to twin the Trans-Canada Highway west of Kenora will begin starting next year.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and premier Dalton McGuinty were in Kenora Friday afternoon to announce 100 million dollars for the construction project.
Harper says the funding is part of the federal government's infrastructure initiative to boost an ailing economy.
Ten kilometers of Highway 17 will be twinned starting in 2010.
Prime Minister Harper says thats the first phase of the plan to double-lane the highway all the way from the Manitoba border to Kenora.
Sidewalk Tenders to be awarded

The City of Kenora is planning to spend a little more on sidewalk
construction and repairs this year.
Council is expected to award the sidewalk maintenance tender next
week.
The lowest bid has come in at around 250 thousand dollars.
City Engineer, Marco Vodrig says they plan to complete the section
of walkway from Bayview Toyota to the Dairy Queen.
That will include things like railings and guard rails.
The contract will also include fixing up the interlocking brick sidewalks in the community.

City council has approved plans to leave the tent up from Canada Day right until October.

A couple of high profile visitors are coming to town.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is making a return trip to Kenora
after visiting last year, and he'll be joined by premier Dalton McGuinty
this time.
This would be McGuinty's first ever visit to the riding since being elected premier five years ago.
The two leaders are scheduled to make a joint announcement at the Operations Center on Barsky's Hill this afternoon.
The press conference is scheduled to take place at 2:30.
DSSAB says no to Land Ambulence Base

That seems to be the response by the Kenora District Services Board
to an offer by the City of Kenora to partner on a new building to house a land ambulence base and fire hall on Barsky's Hill.
The board met behind closed doors yesterday to discuss the issue.
Chief Administrative Officer, Sten Lif says they simply couldn't come to a decision about where to put the land ambulence base by city council's
self imposed deadline of 4:30 this afternoon.
He says they want to weigh all their options before making a final decision on a location for the land ambulence base.
Council wanted a yes or no decision so it could decide whether to proceed with a stand alone fire hall.

Hockey Day In Canada Update

Kenora is still in the running for CBC's Hockey Day in Canada.
The city was notified yesterday afternoon that Kenora was one of three finalists in the running to host the day long TV special in 2010.
Councillor Chris Van Wallenghem says CBC officials will be in town either May 25th or 26th for a site visit.
Kenora was one of six potential sites selected for nexts years event, and the CBC says it will decide within 10 days of its tour where Hockey Day in Canada will take place.
New School Dryden

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is still hopeful that construction can begin this year on a new elementary school in Dryden.
The board had to go back to the drawing board after the last design came in way over budget.
Dean Carrie is the Superintendant of Business and says they are trying to stay within the 14.3 million dollar allocation from the Ministry of Education.
The initial design had room for as many as 600 students.
The project is expected to go out for tender by the end of June, and construction could begin before the end of summer.
LOW Hospital Energy Audit

The Lake of the Woods Hospital has hired Honeywell Corporation to look for energy efficiencies in their building.
The company will be conducting an energy audit this month.
C.E.O. Marc Balcaen says the report should be ready some time in June.
The hospital is paying Honeywell 32 thousand dollars for the audit and study.
Meanwhile, the hospital is also one of 25 facilities to undergo a purchasing protocol audit by the Ministry of Finance.
Recreation Centre Plan

The City of Kenora is planning to spend up to 50 thousand dollars on a recreation plan.
Councillor Chris Van Wallenghem says they not only want to find ways of streamlining costs at the Kenora Rec. Center, they also want to maximize usage.
Van Wallenghem adds that the study can also be used to tap into infrastructure money announced by the federal government recently, which will be used to fix up aging recreation facilities.
Cancer Care NWO

Northwestern Ontario residents have a higher incidence of cancer than other parts of the province.
That's according to Dr. Michael Sherar, who is the vice-president of regional programs for Cancer Care Ontario.
He was in Kenora yesterday for the annual spring forum.
Sherar says there are a number of reasons for the higher cancer rate in this region.
Dr. Sherar says fortunately, this region has very good cancer treatment facilities.
He adds that despite the large distances between hospitals, patients can often get treatment in their home communities thanks to the tele-health system.

A respiratory outbreak has been declared at the long term care facility in Kenora.
The Northwestern Health Unit and home staff are working together to control and prevent the spread of the illness.

Boat Crash LOW

It's not even summer yet, and the OPP's Marine Unit has already seen its first collision on Lake of the Woods.
Yesterday, a vessel struck a reef in the area of Canoe Channel near the Keewatin Channel.
8 people were travelling in the 21 foot Doral when they came in contact with the reef.
The occupants were able to paddle to a near by island before the boat sunk.
The boat was destroyed but thankfully no one was injured.
OPP are reminding boaters to proceed with caution when you are in unfamiliar waters.

Highway 17 Construction

Construction on safety improvements on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of Thunder Bay are to begin next year.
But the timing on the entire four-laning of Highway 11-17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon remains a big question mark.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has now secured contract's with all of its staff.
The final deal was ratified with the Union representing Elementary Occasional Teachers.
The 4-year agreement includes a 10-percent wage hike over the life of the contract.
Officials say an additional 3.5-percent increase in the 2009-2010 school year has been applied to bring the rates into parity with High School Occasional Teachers.
Norman Park Funding

The City of Kenora has taken the next step in revitalizing Norman Park.
Council recently applied for funding under the Building Canada Fund.
Jeff Port is the city planner and says the project is expected to come in at 5 million dollars.

Dryden is trying to become a "host" community for evacuated centres across Northern Ontario.

New Drinking Driving Laws

Kenora OPP are reminding the public that new drinking and driving legislation takes effect today.
Drivers found with a blood alcohol level between point-0-5 and point 0-8 will lose their licence for three days.
A second offence brings a seven-day licence suspension and a visit to an alcohol education program.
Three-time offenders lose their licence for 30 days and their vehicle will be fitted with an ignition interlock.
The licence suspensions cannot be appealed.
Ontario Mining Act

The McGuinty Government is making significant strides in Aboriginal consultation in its proposed changes to the mining act.
Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle unveilled the new legislation Thursday.
Gravelle says the act will provide clear rules for industry and reduce the impact of mineral exploration on the environment.
If the legislation is passed, Ontario will begin putting new rules in place later this year.

Kenora City Council has awarded the tender for the remaining landscape work in the areas of the roundabout, City Hall, and Main Street.
Wilco Contracting had the winning bid, coming in at almost 574 thousand dollars.

Ontario Mining Act

About 100 years after it was first enacted, Ontario's Mining Act will receive an update today.
There have been complaints over provisions in the Act that allow prospectors to stake and explore on private lands.
The Canadian Press has learned the changes will modernize the way companies stake claims to be more respectful of private land.

Save Sunset Country

Lodge owners, City Representatives and Tourism Officials piled into the Super 8 on Wednesday to discuss the future of Sunset Country.
Ontario's Ministry of Tourism plans to create a super tourist region for Northern Ontario that would encompass Sault Ste. Marie to the Manitoba border.

Kenora Fire Hazard

The threat of a large scale fire in the Kenora area is starting to worry the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Aviation and Forest Fire Program Officer Terry Popowich says the escalating problem of storm and insect damage has led to volatile conditions.
Popowich says the consequences of lightning or human-caused fires is quite dangerous in that area and they are taking steps to prepare for any blaze.
Popowich adds the area is of special concern because of the number of rural and recreational properties.

Impaired Driving

Kenora OPP have charged several people with impaired driving.
Over the weekend, police came across a vehicle and discovered the driver had been drinking.
28 year old Mike Rogers failed a roadside test and was charged with drinking and driving.
On the west highway officers stopped a vehicle for excessive speed.
35 year old Wayne Henry of Dalles First Nation was charged with impaired driving.
Henry will appear in Kenora court on June 15th to answer the charge.
Spring Seatbelt Campaign

The OPP's Spring Seatbelt campaign has wrapped up and local police laid 30 seatbelt offences during the April blitz.
OPP charged 9 passengers for not buckling up and laid 1 charge relating to child restraints.
In 2008, a total of 24 seatbelt offences were laid as well as 2 child restraint charges.
New Cancer System

A total of 14 regional sites, including Dryden, Red Lake and Kenora, are now directly connected electronically.
The system allows nurses and physicians order treatments and access information in real-time.
Officials say orders transferred over the internet now arrive at home sites quickly and efficiently.
Northern Growth Rates

The labour force in all sectors grew at a lower rate in the Kenora District than Ontario as a whole between 2001 and 2006.
According to the 2009 Northwest Training and Adjustment Board report, our growth rate was only 2.8-percent, compared to the Provincial average of 8.2.
Mining, small bussines, management and utilities were various sectors that fared well locally.
The unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24-years in the Kenora District was also significantly higher; 17.3-percent compared to Ontario's 14.5-percent.
The report also indicates that 36.7-percent of those aged 15 to 64 in our area have less than a high school diploma.
The Provincial average is 18.7-percent.
Elementary Teachers Ratify

Elementary teachers with the Keewatin Patricia District School board have sealed the deal.
Members of the teachers union approved a new four year collective agreement on Tuesday evening.
The new deal will impact 240 public school teachers in the Northwest.
The contract includes wage and benefit improvements.
Their last contract expired on August 31st, 2008.
Red Lake Budget

Red Lake taxpayers will likely be pleased with the 2009 budget.
Mayor Phil Vinet says they were able to keep the tax rate down.
Vinet says Council has approved a 20-million dollar capital plan.
Work includes a significant paving program as well as water and sewer extension to a Highway Commercial project.
Health and Safety Association

The Head of the Municipal Health and Safety Association says Northern Ontario has been left out of the loop in terms of safety prevention and training.
Speaking in Dryden, Bill Blackborow announced changes to the system.
12 Ontario Safety Associations are being amalgamated; 4-different Associations will be formed, with one Association being positioned in Northern Ontario.
Blackborow adds the change will result in more money for training and services as well as additional jobs in the North.
National Day of Mourning

Northwestern Ontario marked the National Day of Mourning yesterday.
Ron Boucher with the Workers Health and Safety Centre spoke at the event and stressed fewer people are working and more workers are getting injured on the job.
92-fatalities occurred in Ontario in January and February alone.
The Day of Mourning also gave residents a chance to remember those who have lost their life on the job site.
NWHU Swine Flu

Due to the heightened concern of swine flu, the Northwestern Health Unit has released a list of proper hygiene tips.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jim Arthurs says a list of symptoms is also available on the health unit's website.
Arthurs expects cases of Swine flu to be reported in Northwestern Ontario, since people from around the world can come in contact with eachother within 24 hours time.
The health unit recently reviewed its pandemic plan and re-trained its employees.
